About The Lab

Over the last 13 years our computer lab, which serves, on a weekly basis, a K – 5 population of 412 students, has taken on a theme. Past years the lab has been transformed into the pirate ship, The Black Swan, and the dinosaur adventure, The Lab Before Time, and Starship Grattan. Over the next several years the theme for the lab will be the environment. The idea, to create, within the lab, an environment encompassing access, discovery, communication, action and fun. It is called Habitat H.O.P.E. Helping Our Planet Earth. A bit unorthodox, Habitat H.O.P.E. brings nature into an urban classroom setting. From its pond and waterfall, and abundance of live plants, to the release of tiny critters where the creatures are allowed to roam free. Working within this environment students are encouraged to use the technology at their fingertips to explore and examine the world in which they live. With a Tree House Bird Observatory, a two man canoe computer work station in the wetlands habitat, the camping area, the greenhouse, and “The Hive”, our rethinking about computer station design has produced effective and fun learning environments. It is an ongoing effort to enhance a students learning experience, and to expand upon the idea of creative, interactive, workstations which have a specific emphasis for students to explore.
